On the night of 9-10 November 1938, 80 years ago, Kristallnacht took place. Jewish buildings, businesses, shops, schools and synagogues were destroyed by the Nazi’s; windows were smashed onto the street giving the night its name and hundreds of German and Austrian Jews were murdered or injured. This is said to be the beginning of Nazi Germany’s Final Solution and the Holocaust.

The Brighton and Hove Progressive synagogue commemorate Kristallnacht on its 80th anniversary with a survivor of the terrible event, Margaret Mendelsohn, who was 8 at the time of the Kristallnacht. Margaret reads extracts from her autobiography and answers questions from the younger congregation about that terrible night and what life was like in Germany before they managed to flee to England.
