New Church Road Development - Aerial

The Bloom Foundation propose to redevelop the existing Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregation (BHCC) site, to inject new life and vitality into the Jewish community of Brighton and Hove and the wider community around New Church Road by creating a vibrant hub for the whole community and surrounding area.

The vision is to create a facility, open to all, which will provide the opportunities that support education, work, worship and life.

Facilities that will strengthen the wider community by encouraging people to become active members of the community and will attract younger Jewish families to live in Brighton & Hove, including:

  • Community kosher café and deli serving a range of food for the whole Brighton & Hove community
  • ‘Work Avenue’ including office space, employment, start-up and business support services
  • Two high-quality classrooms and other facilities for use by St Christopher’s
  • A new nursery to replace the existing facility on the site
  • A new flexible and inspirational Synagogue to replace the existing outdated facility on the site
  • A flexible social hall/function space
  • A full range of social and cultural programmes will be available for the entire community
  • New residential units for sale and rent
  • Underground car park

The design for the proposed development had been developed to carefully consider the potential impact on the neighbouring buildings and the surrounding context to arrive at a development that will have minimal impact on the neighbouring conservation area, enhance the setting of the locally listed buildings and make a positive contribution to the area and the wider city as a whole.

The proposals have been the subject of two separate rounds of public consultation and been presented to both the Design Review Panel and the Planning Committee. As a result, the proposals have evolved to address the comments received and to arrive at a development that respects the surrounding context and will become a vibrant centre of the community in this part of the city.

If you have questions about the development including planning & construction timetable, accommodation on site, finances and energy, heating & security please read our FAQs.

In 2015 the Trustees of the Bloom Foundation were made aware of the difficult financial situation facing BHCC, in 2016 the charity lost £54,000 and was under pressure from declining membership as a result of a dwindling Jewish population in Brighton & Hove.

As a result of these financial pressures BHCC considered selling two thirds of their site to a commercial developer, however the Bloom Foundation stepped in with this alternative that would benefit everyone in the local community, minimise the impact on the neighbouring buildings and revitalise the Jewish community.
